Pay-per-click contextual advertising is a great way to drive quality traffic to your website when you don't have high rankings in the major search engines.

PPC works by having you bid on key words or phrases (keywords) for placement of your ads in prominent positions of search engine results pages (SERPs) and in contextually related websites. The higher your bid, the better placement and more page views your ad will receive relative to other advertisers that have bid on the same keywords.

Popular keywords have higher bids but many keywords can still be found for as little as 5c per click. In fact some PPC sites allow bids of just 1c per click!

The main advantage of PPC advertising is that you receive highly targeted traffic - you only pay for actual clicks on your ads rather than for the number of times that your ads are shown.

It is by far the largest and most effective PPC program around. Others worth trying are Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft AdCenter. These programs are very popular due to their extensive reach and highly targeted traffic, but there are also a number of decent 3rd tier PPC engines.
