A computer, device or software package on a network that provides a service to client software applications. The term server can refer to a particular software package (such as a Web server or Database server) or to the hardware that the software is running on. Common types of servers are File Servers, Web Servers, Database Servers, Print Servers and Network Servers. A server can be dedicated, meaning that its sole purpose is to service clients, or shared, meaning that there may be multiple server software and other packages running on a single computer.
